Jake Haener NO QBSaints' Jake Haener: Competition for QB2
3h agoHaener appears to be the early frontrunner to serve as the QB2 for the Saints this offseason, John Hendrix of Sports Illustrated reports.
Haener was suspended for the first six games of his 2023 campaign and has yet to make his NFL debut. However, the 6-foot-1 signal-caller should have a chance to establish himself as QB2 after New Orleans made several changes at the quarterback position this offseason. Last year's No. 2 QB Jameis Winston signed with the Colts in March. Meanwhile, the Saints signed veteran backup Nathan Peterman and fourth-year pro Kellen Mond this offseason before selecting Spencer Rattler in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Carr is still clearly set as the starter, but the competition to be his primary reserve figures to be wide open this offseason. Haener's experience within the Saints' quarterback room should give him an immediate leg up on Peterman, Mond and Rattler. The 33-year-old Taysom Hill also is listed as a quarterback by the Saints, but he's better described as a multi-use player who regularly slots in at positions across the offense and special teams. It's highly unlikely that the team will carry more than three quarterbacks on the active roster during the 2024 campaign. Therefore, it will be worth monitoring how this competition shapes up during offseason workouts and training camp while projecting this QB depth chart.

6h agoPeat signed with the Raiders on Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
The offensive guard and three-time Pro Bowler spent his first nine seasons in New Orleans. Peat has started 102 of his 111 career games, but he is listed as the Raiders' backup left guard behind Dylan Parham.

Marlon Davidson TEN DETitans' Marlon Davidson: Re-signs with Tennessee
6h agoDavidson re-signed with the Titans on Monday after spending the 2023 season with the team.
The defensive tackle played in five games and on 153 defensive snaps last year, recording 10 tackles. Davidson finished with 29 tackles in two seasons with the Falcons before missing the 2022 season with a knee injury. The 2020 second-round pick is behind Jeffery Simmons on Tennessee's depth chart.

6h agoPitts was waived by the Packers on Monday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
The wide receiver joined the Green Bay practice squad in December and signed a reserve/future contract in January. Pitts was cut from the Patriots' practice squad before the 2023 season began.

8h agoThe Panthers agreed to terms with Penny on Monday.
Penny is now 28 years old and spent last season in Philadelphia, where he appeared in just three regular-season games and was routinely a healthy scratch on game days. When healthy in Seattle from 2018-2022, he was electric with the ball in his hands, averaging a lethal 5.7 yards per carry on 337 rushing attempts, but an inability to stay on the field was his downfall. He has a history with new Panthers coach Dave Canales from their time together in Seattle, and Penny gives the Panthers backfield some more experience behind Chuba Hubbard and rookie Jonathon Brooks. There has been chatter that Miles Sanders' time may be running out with the team after just one season in Carolina.

11h agoBurrow (wrist) was on the field throwing at the Bengals' facility Monday.
Burrow's season ended 27 snaps into Week 11 last season, after which he required surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right (throwing) wrist. Earlier in the offseason, he stated that he expected to be fully cleared by mid-May, and it appears he's on track. Burrow should be all systems go well in time for training camp later this summer. His weaponry has gone a bit of an overhaul, with Joe Mixon, Tyler Boyd and Irv Smith jettisoned. Veterans Zack Moss and Mike Gesicki were signed as free agents to go along with returnees Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.

Freddie Freeman LAD 1BDodgers' Freddie Freeman: Goes deep Monday
4m agoFreeman went 1-for-4 with a solo home run against the Marlins in Monday's 6-3 win.
Though his long ball didn't travel nearly as far, Freeman followed Shohei Ohtani in the first inning Monday as the pair slugged back-to-back homers. Freeman has yet to fully flex his power this season -- he has just three homers through 167 plate appearances -- but he's been otherwise productive, as usual, with a .292/.407/.445 slash line, 21 RBI, 18 runs and a stolen base. The veteran first baseman is also tied for seventh in the league with 10 doubles and tied for fifth with 24 walks.

8m agoClase picked up the save Monday against Detroit, striking out one batter across a perfect ninth frame.
Clase turned in a third consecutive perfect outing, throwing merely nine pitches to earn his 11th save of 2024. The 26-year-old has been incredible thus far, boasting a 19:1 K:BB and a 0.49 ERA through 18.1 innings and is tied for the league lead in saves.

Shohei Ohtani LAD DHDodgers' Shohei Ohtani: Continues to destroy baseballs
9m agoOhtani went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run, a walk and two stolen bases Monday in a 6-3 victory versus Miami.
Fresh off being named the National League's Player of the Week after posting an absurd .524/.583/.952 slash line over his previous five games, Ohtani crushed a 441-foot, two-run homer in his first at-bat Monday to open the scoring for Los Angeles. He went on to notch his third straight multi-hit game and added a pair of steals for good measure, giving him four thefts over his past four games. It took Ohtani nine games as a Dodger before he hit his first long ball, but he's since gone deep 11 times -- including four times over his past three games -- to take over the major-league lead in that category. He's also tied for second in the majors with 31 runs, tied for sixth with 27 RBI and leads all of baseball with a 1.139 OPS. In addition, Ohtani has nine stolen bases, putting him on the verge of becoming the league's first player with double-digit homers and thefts this season.

Roddery Munoz MIA SPMarlins' Roddery Munoz: Knocked around by Dodgers
20m agoMunoz (1-1) took the loss against the Dodgers on Monday, allowing six runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out five batters over 4.2 innings.
Munoz pitched well in his first two major-league starts, giving up three earned runs and posting a 14:3 K:BB over 11 innings, but he was no match for one of the league's top offenses. The rookie right-hander was blasted for four homers in his first three innings and needed 104 pitches to make in through 4.2 frames. In addition to the long balls, Munoz struggled with his control, issuing a career-high four free passes -- more than he had allowed in his first two starts combined. With both Jesus Luzardo (elbow) and Braxton Garrett (shoulder) currently in the midst of minor-league rehab assignments, Munoz could lose his spot in the Marlins' rotation in short order.

Alex Vesia LAD RPDodgers' Alex Vesia: Gets save chance in Phillips' stead
26m agoVesia earned a save against the Marlins on Monday, striking out one batter in a perfect ninth inning.
When Evan Phillips (hamstring) was placed on the injured list Sunday, there arose uncertainty about whom Dodgers manager Dave Roberts would turn to when the next save chance came up. The answer turned out to be Vesia, who has been arguably the team's best reliever (outside of Phillips) this season with a 1.56 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 20:12 K:BB over 17.1 innings. The southpaw handled the opportunity well, retiring the side in order on 13 pitches, nine of which were strikes. It's worth noting that the Marlins were due to send up two left-handed hitters among the first three batters in the frame (though both lefties were swapped for a righty pinch hitter), so that may have played into the Roberts' decision to call upon Vesia rather than a righty reliever. It's too early to assume that Vesia will be the primary closer while Phillips remains out, but he certainly appears to be in the mix for save chances along with Daniel Hudson and possibly Blake Treinen.

27m agoSchwarber went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional run scored during Monday's 6-1 win over San Francisco.
Schwarber belted the long ball in the eighth inning off Tyler Rogers, giving the Phillies an additional run of cushion heading into the ninth. Schwarber also reached base in the fifth inning on a single and was driven in on a Bryce Harper homer. Over his last 10 games, Schwarber is 11-for-42 (.262) with 11 runs scored and nine RBI.

2h agoMorris won't return to Monday's Game 2 against the Nuggets due to a right index finger sprain.
Morris left the game in the second half and was quickly ruled out for the remainder of the matchup. He logged eight minutes prior to departing, so his absence shouldn't impact Minnesota's rotation much.

2h agoJackson exited Monday's Game 2 against the Timberwolves with an apparent left ankle injury, Vincent Goodwill of Yahoo Sports reports.
Jackson exited the contest with eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, and considering the deficit Denver faced when he left, it seems unlikely that he'll return. He'll be considered day-to-day until the team provides additional details on his status.

3h agoBrunson ended with 43 points (14-26 FG, 1-4 3Pt, 14-14 FT), six rebounds, six assists and one block over 43 minutes in Monday's 121-117 win over Indiana in Game 1 of the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Brunson once again did it all for New York in a winning effort, leading all players in Monday's Game 1 in scoring while finishing with a perfect mark from the free-throw line to go along with a half-dozen rebounds and assists in an all-around performance. Brunson has taken his game to the next level of late, posting four straight games with 40 or more points. New York's success rides on the performance of Brunson, and he will continue to be a focal point for the team for as long as the Knicks can push their playoff run.

3h agoDiVincenzo notched 25 points (10-17 FG, 5-9 3Pt), three rebounds, two blocks and one assist over 44 minutes in Monday's 121-117 win over Indiana in Game 1 of the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
DiVincenzo put on a show from deep in Monday's victory, leading all players in the game in threes made while ending as one of three Knicks with 20 or more points. DiVincenzo, who also recorded a team-high pair of blocks, posted his highest point total of the postseason and has tallied 20 or more points in two straight outings. DiVincenzo has found success from deep of late, connecting on five threes in back-to-back games.

3h agoHart tallied 24 points (9-13 FG, 1-1 3Pt, 5-8 FT), 13 rebounds, eight assists, three steals and one block over 48 minutes in Monday's 121-117 win over Indiana in Game 1 of the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Hart did a little bit of everything for New York to boost the team to a Game 1 victory, leading all players in Monday's contest in rebounds and assists to go along with a team-high trio of steals and coming up two dimes shy of a triple-double. Hart has seen a heavy amount of playing time so far this postseason, resulting in tallying a double-double in four of his seven playoff contests. Hart, who posted his highest point total of the playoffs, has surpassed the 20-point mark on four occasions.

4h agoHaliburton posted six points (2-6 FG, 2-5 3Pt), eight assists, four steals and two rebounds over 36 minutes in Monday's 121-117 loss to New York in Game 1 of the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Haliburton had a quiet performance offensively in the first game of the Eastern Conference Semifinals, though he still impacted the game in other ways, including by leading the Pacers in assists and steals despite failing to reach double figures in scoring. Haliburton posted his lowest point total of the postseason thus far, failing to reach double digits for the second time in seven playoff contests. Haliburton has been dealing with back spasms, and that may have affected his performance Monday.

2h agoBarkov posted an assist, two shots on goal, three hits and a minus-2 rating in Monday's 5-1 loss to the Bruins in Game 1.
Barkov forced a turnover and fed Matthew Tkachuk for the opening tally, but that was all the Panthers could produce against Jeremy Swayman. In addition to the helper, Barkov went 19-for-28 at the faceoff dot, which was a strength for the Panthers as a whole against a less experienced Boston center group than in years past. Barkov is up to two goals, four assists, 16 shots on net, 16 hits, seven blocked shots and a plus-1 rating over six playoff outings.

2h agoTkachuk scored a goal on five shots, added six hits and went minus-3 in Monday's 5-1 loss to the Bruins in Game 1.
Tkachuk opened the scoring in the second period, converting a feed from Aleksander Barkov following a turnover. Tkachuk is on a nine-game point streak dating back to April 11, during which he has produced five goals and nine assists, with 10 of those 14 points coming in his six playoff outings. The winger has added 26 shots on net, 18 hits and a plus-1 rating in the postseason.

Sergei Bobrovsky FLA GPanthers' Sergei Bobrovsky: Falters in Game 1
2h agoBobrovsky allowed four goals on 28 shots in Monday's 5-1 loss to the Bruins in Game 1 of the second round. The fifth goal was an empty-netter.
Bobrovsky was excellent for the first half of the game, but the Bruins got to him three times in 6:47 late in the second period and never looked back. The 35-year-old goalie has allowed 18 goals over six postseason appearances, going 4-2 in those contests. The Lightning never presented a sustained challenge in the first round, but the Bruins look stronger, which could make this a tough series if Bobrovsky can't shake off this loss. Game 2 is Wednesday in Florida.

Bruins' Parker Wotherspoon: Pockets helper in Game 1 win
2h agoWotherspoon logged an assist, three shots on goal and two PIM in a 5-1 win over the Panthers on Monday in Game 1 of the second round.
Wotherspoon has played in six straight games since entering the lineup for Game 3 of the first round. The helper was his first point since March 26. The 26-year-old defenseman will continue to work in a bottom-pairing role, so there's not much fantasy appeal in his game. He's earned 11 hits, 11 blocked shots, six shots on net and a plus-1 rating in the postseason after recording eight helpers, 84 hits and 67 blocks over 41 regular-season appearances.

2h agoVan Riemsdyk registered an assist, two shots on goal and four hits in Monday's 5-1 win over the Panthers in Game 1.
Van Riemsdyk has a helper in three straight contests, and he's up to four points over six playoff outings. The 35-year-old winger's continued success on offense can only help him stick in the lineup as a bottom-six forward with power-play skills. In addition to his offense, he's picked up 11 hits, 10 sohts on net and a plus-3 rating this postseason.

2h agoFrederic recorded an assist, six hits, 10 PIM and a plus-2 rating in Monday's 5-1 win over the Panthers in Game 1.
Frederic helped out on Brandon Carlo's goal late in the second period. The 26-year-old Frederic is up to four points through eight playoff contests, solid work for a player in a third-line role with virtually no power-play time. He's added 34 hits, 10 PIM and a plus-7 rating. Frederic can offer solid play as a checking forward, but consistent offense is likely too much to ask of him.
