Sam Darnold MIN QBVikings' Sam Darnold: Vikings won't rush to name starting QB
9h agoThe Vikings could begin the season with Darnold as the team's starting quarterback despite taking J.J. McCarthy with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, ESPN reports. "We're not going to rush his development," said general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. "We're just going to do what's best for the Vikings in the short and long term."
Darnold signed a one-year, $10 million contract with the Vikings as a short-term veteran starter or backup. It's hard to handicap when McCarthy may take over the starting job this soon after the draft, but it's notable the Vikings are trying to reduce expectations. Expect the quarterback battle for the Week 1 starting job to commence this summer. Still, odds are Darnold will only be the starter for a few weeks at most if McCarthy is healthy and making progress.

12h agoKnox signed with the Vikings as an undrafted free agent Saturday.
After four years at Arkansas, Knox transferred to South Carolina for his fifth-year senior season. He compiled a 37-312-2 receiving line for the Gamecocks. He switched positions from wide receiver to tight end in 2021. Knox joins a tight end room that includes T.J. Hockenson, Josh Oliver, Johnny Mundt and Nick Muse in Minnesota.

"Tulu" stands at 5-foot-10 and 181 pounds and ran a 4.43 forty at the combine after leading Mississippi State in receiving with a 50-658-4 line as a senior. His main selling point for the Raiders could be his returner skills after he showed some electricity with the ball in his hands during college.

13h agoThe Raiders signed Bradley as an undrafted free agent Saturday.
Bradley has good size at 6-foot-3 and 213 pounds and spent the final two years of his college career at South Alabama following four years in Toledo's program. He threw for 5,996 yards at South Alabama, amassing 47 touchdowns and 19 interceptions. In Las Vegas, Bradley slides in at the bottom of the depth chart behind Gardner Minshew, Aidan O'Connell and Anthony Brown.

Edwards was just a one-year starter at Georgia and overall functioned as part of a backfield committee. He concluded his four-year collegiate career with a 391-2,082-24 rushing line. Edwards is strong in pass-protection and joins a Pittsburgh backfield that is led by Najee Harris, Jaylen Warren and newcomer Cordarrelle Patterson.

13h agoWatson is slated to sign with the Broncos as an undrafted free agent, Nick Kosmider of The Athletic reports.
Watson spent five years at Old Dominion before transferring to Memphis for his super-senior season. He led the Tigers in rushing with 192-1,152-14 on the ground and added 53-480-3 as a receiver, earning All-AAC honors. Watson joins a crowded Denver backfield depth chart that includes Javonte Williams, Samaje Perine, Jaleel McLaughlin and fifth-round rookie Audric Estime.

Ryan Jeffers MIN CTwins' Ryan Jeffers: Homers, extends hitting streak
5m agoJeffers went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and a walk in Saturday's win over the Angels.
Jeffers recorded a single in his second at-bat to extend his hitting streak to six games and then added a two-run homer in the top of the ninth as the Twins ran away with the win. The catcher has now homered in two of his last three contests and has recorded at least one RBI in three straight. All five of his home runs have come in April, where he's batting .333 with 16 RBI and 11 runs scored.

Ruiz had started in each of the Athletics' last three games and five of the previous six contests, but he'll head to the bench Sunday. With Brent Rooker recently returning from the injured list and with Seth Brown, JJ Bleday and Lawrence Butler seemingly representing greater priorities in the outfield, Ruiz may be the odd man out for a regular spot in the lineup versus right-handed pitching.

For the second time in three games, Allen will hit the bench against a right-handed starting pitcher (Albert Suarez) while Darell Hernaiz checks in for him at shortstop. Allen is the more established big-league player of the two shortstops, but given that he posted a lowly .550 OPS over 329 plate appearances in 2023 and is off to an even worse start in 2024 (.490 OPS In 73 plate appearances), the Athletics could be motivated to give the rookie Hernaiz an extended look at the position.

12m agoJudge went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run, an additional run scored and a walk in a 15-3 win against the Brewers on Saturday.
Judge contributed to New York's demolition of Milwaukee on Saturday with a 417-foot, two-run blast to center field in the sixth inning. It was just the fifth homer of the year for the slugger, who is off to a slow start with a .190/.326/.390 slash line through 128 plate appearances. Judge's .200 ISO is easily on pace for his lowest mark over any full season of his big-league career.

14m agoSchuemann will start at second base and bat sixth in Sunday's game against the Orioles.
Schuemann has now occupied the keystone in four straight contests and could be the preferred option over Abraham Toro at the position while Zack Gelof (oblique) is on the injured list. The 26-year-old rookie has done little to build much job security to this point, however, as he enters Sunday's contest with a .118/.250/.294 slash line across 20 plate appearances on the season.

Martinez went 3-for-8 with a double, an RBI and five strikeouts in his first two games with the Mets but will take a seat for Sunday's series finale versus St. Louis. DJ Stewart will step in as the designated hitter and bat cleanup.

3m agoHarris racked up three points (1-2 FG, 1-2 3Pt), two rebounds, one assist and one steal over 24 minutes during Saturday's 112-89 win over Cleveland in Game 4 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
After playing 33 and 34 minutes, respectively, during the first two games of the opening-round series -- both losses in Cleveland, Harris played 21 and 24 minutes during the two wins in Orlando. Outside of a 14-point outing in Game 2, Harris has been a non-factor offensively, going just 1-for-11 from the field. Defensively, he has six steals through four games and at least one swipe in each matchup.

Jalen Suggs ORL SGMagic's Jalen Suggs: Mixed results in Game 4
6m agoSuggs registered 12 points (4-7 FG, 2-5 3Pt, 2-2 FT), two rebounds and three assists in 29 minutes during Saturday's 112-89 win over the Cavaliers in Game 4 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Suggs exploded for 24 points (9-11 FG) during Orlando's Game 3 win and was productive again in Game 4 as the Magic evened the series at 2-2. However, he committed seven turnovers Saturday after coughing the ball up only three times over the prior three matchups. Despite inconsistent production to start the postseason, Suggs has been one of the Magic's top overall producers to start the postseason, averaging 14.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.3 steals in 29.8 minutes across four games.

9m agoWagner finished Saturday's 112-89 win over Cleveland in Game 4 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs with 34 points (13-17 FG, 2-3 3Pt, 6-7 FT), 13 rebounds, four assists and one block in 40 minutes.
Wagner didn't score more than 18 points through the first three matchups of the opening-round series but exploded for a game-high 34 in Game 4 and was incredibly efficient. His 34 points marked his most since Feb. 8, and his 13 rebounds were a career high. Wagner struggled mightily with his three-point shot to end the regular season, but he's made at least two triples in three of four postseason games thus far.

Niang has totaled just 14 points and six rebounds through Clevleand's first four postseason games. He's averaging 18.5 minutes per game.

17m agoOkoro provided one rebound, one assist and one steal over 21 minutes during Saturday's 112-89 loss to the Magic in Game 4 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Okoro scored 14 points during the first two games in Cleveland -- both wins. However, he was held scoreless across the two losses in Orlando and attempted three total shots during those contests. On the bright side, Okoro has eight steals through four postseason games thus far.

Caris LeVert CLE SGCavaliers' Caris LeVert: Drops dud Saturday
20m agoLeVert finished with five points (2-8 FG, 0-3 3Pt, 1-2 FT), one rebound, three assists and one steal across 26 minutes during Saturday's 112-89 loss to the Magic in Game 4 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
LeVert's three-point shot failed him in Game 4, and he's now shooting just 23.5 percent from deep during the postseason. He should continue to operate as Cleveland's top bench option, but LeVert has scored in double figures just once through four postseason games after averaging 17.9 points on 54.3 percent shooting across his final seven regular-season appearances.

Brandon Montour FLA DPanthers' Brandon Montour: Heating up in playoffs
1h agoMontour registered an assist and four blocked shots versus the Lightning in Game 4 on Saturday, but it still wasn't enough, as the Panthers suffered a 6-3 loss.
After being held without a point in the first two games of the conference quarterfinals, Montour stacked a goal and two helpers between Game 3 and Game 4. The eighth-year defenseman has always had a high ceiling in terms of offensive potential, but there had been a fair number of detractors until Montour's eye-popping 73-point campaign surfaced in 2022-23. He had offseason shoulder surgery and missed the first 16 games of the recently completed regular season, leveling back down to a half-point-per game average. In this playoff series, Montour is averaging 23:26 of ice time with 2:27 on the man advantage. This Panthers team will have another crack at eliminating the Lightning at home for Game 5 on Monday.

1h agoPoint scored a goal and added two assists, one on the power play, during Game 4's 6-3 win over the Panthers on Saturday.
The 28-year-old center had a hand in both of Steven Stamkos' tallies and fired home his own goal late in the first period to give Tampa Bay a 3-0 lead. Point has two goals and five points through the series' first four games, and the Bolts may need another strong performance from him in Game 5 on Monday to avoid elimination.

Nikita Kucherov TB RWLightning's Nikita Kucherov: Three helpers in Saturday's win
1h agoKucherov recorded three assists, one on the power play, in Saturday's 6-3 win over the Panthers in Game 4.
Two of the helpers came in the third period as the Lightning put the game away. Kucherov is still looking for his first goal of the postseason, but he's found the scoresheet in all four contests so far while collecting six assists. He may need to come up big again in Game 5 on Monday if Tampa Bay is going to avoid elimination again.

Brandon Hagel TB LWLightning's Brandon Hagel: Three points in Game 4
1h agoHagel scored two goals, one shorthanded and the other the game-winner, and added a power-play assist Saturday in a 6-3 victory over the Panthers in Game 4.
After setting up Steven Stamkos for the game's opening tally midway through the first period, Hagel followed with his own a few minutes later before giving the Lightning a 4-1 lead in the second. The 25-year-old had managed only one goal and zero assists through the first three games of the series, and his offensive eruption helped Tampa Bay avoid a first-round sweep. Hagel will look to stay locked in Monday for Game 5.

Mikhail Sergachev TB DLightning's Mikhail Sergachev: Notches helper in return
1h agoSergachev (leg) picked up an assist and added two blocked shots and a hit in 17:03 of ice time during Game 4's 6-3 win over the Panthers on Saturday.
Seeing his first game action since fracturing his left leg in multiple places Feb. 7, Sergachev's surprising and early return gave the Lightning an emotional boost and helped them avoid getting swept out of the first round. The 25-year-old blueliner didn't see his usual workload, but that's to be expected given his long layoff. He'll likely see similar ice time Monday in Game 5.

Nick Paul TB CLightning's Nick Paul: Secures crucial win for Bolts
1h agoPaul netted a power-play goal in Saturday's 6-3 win over the Panthers for Game 4 of the conference quarterfinals.
The Lightning actually had a two-man advantage at the time, with Paul collecting his own rebound at the top of the cage for a backhand insurance tally. Paul broke out offensively in the regular season, adding 24 goals, 22 assists and 14 power-play points -- those were all career-high marks for the versatile forward, who commanded a seven-year, $22.05 million deal with the Lightning in July of 2022.
