Tyquan Thornton NE WRPatriots' Tyquan Thornton: Role this season TBD
11m agoWith the Patriots having selected two wide receivers in the 2024 NFL Draft, Thornton's standing on the team's depth chart is unclear ahead of training camp, per Chad Graff of the Athletic.
In his post-draft roster assessment, Graff suggests that Thornton, who is presumably past the ankle issue that sidelined him in the Patriots' 2023 regular-season finale, isn't a roster lock ahead of Week 1. Over the first two years of his pro career, the 2022 second-rounder has had trouble staying on the field and has been limited to 35 catches in 22 contests in that span. While Thornton's speed could help him stick around if he has a strong summer, for now he currently has Kendrick Bourne, Ja'Lynn Polk, Demario Douglas, Javon Baker, K.J. Osborn, Jalen Reagor, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Kayshon Boutte to contend with for depth chart slotting.

2h agoBoyd and the Titans agreed to terms Tuesday on a one-year contract worth up to $4.5 million, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
Boyd becomes the newest member of a revamped Tennessee wide receiver corps that added Calvin Ridley atop the depth chart in a huge free agency contract, joining DeAndre Hopkins and Treylon Burks. Ridley and Hopkins figure to operate as quarterback Will Levis' clear top two targets, as both exceeded 1,000 receiving yards last season. Boyd's experience could make him the favorite to secure the No. 3 role over Burks, though it's perhaps more probable that Boyd dominates slot reps while Burks sees more opportunities on the outside. In both 2018 and 2019, Boyd himself topped 1,000 yards, but in four seasons since took a clear backseat to Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins with the Bengals.

Tank Dell HOU WRTexans' Tank Dell: Full recovery from wound expected
3h agoTexans Chief Executive Officer Cal McNair indicated Monday that Dell (leg) is expected to make a "full recovery" from what the team has described as a minor wound that occurred during an April 27th shooting, the Associated Press reports.
Though McNair didn't provide details on the nature of the wideout's injury, he noted "it looks like Tank will make a full recovery. We saw him in the office the other day and he looked good, in good spirits. But he'll have to rehab and get back to where he was." Per the report, Dell has recovered from a fibula injury that he sustained last December, but it remains to be seen if the 2023 third-rounder's participation in the Texans' upcoming OTAs will be impacted by the wound he sustained last month. Once Dell has recovered, he'll be in line to reclaim his role in a Houston wide receiver corps that also returns Nico Collins, Robert Woods, Noah Brown and John Metchie, and has been bolstered by high-profile trade acquisition Stefon Diggs. In 11 regular-season games in 2023, Dell made his mark as a rookie by recording a 47-709-7 receiving line, while serving as a key pass-catching option for ascending signal-caller C.J. Stroud.

Christian Gonzalez NE CBPatriots' Christian Gonzalez: Recovering well, unsure for OTAs
3h agoGonzalez (shoulder) said Tuesday he feels "healthy" but is unsure how much he'll participate in OTAs, Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald reports.
Gonzalez, a 2023 first-round pick, had a strong start to his career before suffering a season-ending right torn labrum in just Week 4. Per Mike Reiss of ESPN.com, Gonzalez is still rehabbing and focusing on strengthening his shoulder, so it sounds like he may be a limited participant at best when OTAs kick off May 20. Barring any setbacks, there are no concerns about Gonzalez gaining full medical clearance in advance of the 2024 regular season, and returning to a starting role at cornerback.

Jake Haener NO QBSaints' Jake Haener: Competition for QB2
16h agoHaener appears to be the early frontrunner to serve as the QB2 for the Saints this offseason, John Hendrix of Sports Illustrated reports.
Haener was suspended for the first six games of his 2023 campaign and has yet to make his NFL debut. However, the 6-foot-1 signal-caller should have a chance to establish himself as QB2 after New Orleans made several changes at the quarterback position this offseason. Last year's No. 2 QB Jameis Winston signed with the Colts in March. Meanwhile, the Saints signed veteran backup Nathan Peterman and fourth-year pro Kellen Mond this offseason before selecting Spencer Rattler in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Carr is still clearly set as the starter, but the competition to be his primary reserve figures to be wide open this offseason. Haener's experience within the Saints' quarterback room should give him an immediate leg up on Peterman, Mond and Rattler. The 33-year-old Taysom Hill also is listed as a quarterback by the Saints, but he's better described as a multi-use player who regularly slots in at positions across the offense and special teams. It's highly unlikely that the team will carry more than three quarterbacks on the active roster during the 2024 campaign. Therefore, it will be worth monitoring how this competition shapes up during offseason workouts and training camp while projecting this QB depth chart.

The offensive guard and three-time Pro Bowler spent his first nine seasons in New Orleans. Peat has started 102 of his 111 career games, but he is listed as the Raiders' backup left guard behind Dylan Parham.

Alec Marsh KC SPRoyals' Alec Marsh: Excels in four-inning rehab start
5m agoMarsh (elbow) struck out six and gave up one hit and one walk over four shutout innings Sunday in his rehab start with Triple-A Omaha.
According to Anne Rogers of MLB.com, Royals manager Matt Quatraro said prior to Sunday's rehab outing that Marsh was being targeted for 60-to-65 pitches, but the right-hander fell slightly short of that benchmark with 53 pitches (38 strikes). In any case, Marsh mowed down the Triple-A Iowa lineup in efficient fashion and looks as though he could be ready to return from the 15-day injured list when first eligible Friday against the Angels. If the Royals instead decide to give Marsh one more rehab start to increase his pitch count, Daniel Lynch would likely be in store for a second turn through the rotation this weekend.

10m agoGelof (oblique) has progressed to taking light swings in the batting cage, but he remains without a firm timetable for return, MLB.com reports.
It's been an eventful last few days on the recovery front for Gelof, who resumed some baseball activities by fielding grounders and playing catch Wednesday and then threw across the infield before the Athletics' game Friday. The progression to picking up a bat is another step in the right direction, but the team remains committed to not sending Gelof out on a rehab assignment prematurely due to the risk of aggravating the injury.

German Marquez COL SPRockies' German Marquez: Facing hitters at extended spring
13m agoRockies manager Bud Black said April 24 that Marquez (elbow) hasn't experienced any setbacks since he resumed facing hitters at extended spring training in Arizona, MLB.com reports.
Marquez opened the season on the 60-day injured list while he continues his recovery from Tommy John surgery, which he underwent May 12, 2023. Closing in on the one-year mark in his rehab program, Marquez appears to be coming along as expected, but the Rockies haven't indicated when he'll be able to resume pitching in minor-league rehab games. The team is preparing for Marquez to return from the 60-day IL at some point around midseason.

16m agoEovaldi (groin) was seen playing catch ahead of Tuesday's game against the Athletics, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Manager Bruce Bochy provided a positive update Monday with news that the right-hander isn't dealing with a sports hernia, and Eovaldi is back to playing catch a day later. Barring any sort of setback, the 34-year-old could be good to go without needing a rehab assignment once he clears the 15-day IL on May 18. In the meantime, Jose Urena and Jack Leiter will be deployed as starters when necessary.

17m agoMartinez made his most recent appearance as a reliever in Saturday's 2-1 loss to the Orioles, striking out two and allowing no hits and one walk over two scoreless innings.
Martinez's prior two appearances came as a starter, but he moved back to the bullpen over the weekend in anticipation of Frankie Montas' (forearm) return to the rotation. With the Reds officially activating Montas from the 15-day injured list to start Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks, Martinez should stick in the bullpen moving forward until one of Cincinnati's five starters succumbs to another injury.

3h agoWood exercised his $3 million player option for the 2024-25 season Tuesday, Michael Scotto of USA Today reports.
Wood was a sporadic part of the rotation in Los Angeles this season, appearing in 50 games with averages of 6.9 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 17.4 minutes. There could potentially be a lot of changes for the Lakers this offseason depending on whether or not LeBron James picks up his player option, so it's difficult to project Wood's role for next season at the moment.

6h agoGordon registered 20 points (8-14 FG, 3-5 3Pt, 1-2 FT), four rebounds, two assists and one steal in 33 minutes during Monday's 106-80 loss to Minnesota in Game 2 of the Western Conference Semifinals.
Gordon played with tons of energy and tried to spark the rest of the team throughout the game, but his efforts were unsuccessful. This game snapped a three-game streak of Gordon not being able to reach double-digit figures in the scoring column, and Gordon needs to remain a valuable offensive alternative for the Nuggets if they want to have a shot at turning the series around, especially given the struggles of both Jamal Murray and Michael Porter.

6h agoJokic amassed 16 points (5-13 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 6-6 FT), 16 rebounds, eight assists and one block across 39 minutes during Monday's 106-80 loss to the Timberwolves in Game 2 of the Western Conference Semifinals.
Jokic can change a game by himself at any point of a contest and is dominant enough to carry Denver to victory on a regular basis, but he hasn't been able to do it in the first two games of the current series. The two-time MVP winner is averaging 27.0 points, 15.0 rebounds and 9.4 assists per game through seven playoff contests. While he remains an absolute stud in fantasy regardless of what happens with the Nuggets as a team, he needs his teammates to take a step forward to avoid an early exit in their quest to win back-to-back NBA titles.

6h agoMurray finished with eight points (3-18 FG, 0-4 3Pt, 2-2 FT), 13 rebounds, two assists, one block and two steals across 36 minutes during Monday's 106-80 loss to Minnesota in Game 2 of the Western Conference Semifinals.
Murray has struggled badly in the postseason when it comes to his efficiency despite the fact he had some good moments in the series against the Lakers. However, Monday's game was a new low for him, as he missed 15 of his 18 shots and didn't reach the 10-point plateau for the first time since Feb. 29. Murray needs to bounce back if the Nuggets want to have a shot at turning things around. He's averaging 12.5 points per game while shooting just 28.1 percent from the floor in his first two appearances in the series.

6h agoAlexander-Walker accumulated 14 points (5-9 FG, 4-7 3Pt), six rebounds, one assist and three blocks in 30 minutes during Monday's 106-80 win over the Nuggets in Game 2 of the Western Conference Semifinals.
As has been the case throughout the entire playoff run, Alexander-Walker was impressive and provided a scoring punch off the bench, unsettling the Nuggets with his long-range shooting and energy. Alexander-Walker averaged just 8.0 points per game during the regular season, but he's taken his play to another level in the playoffs, scoring in double digits in four of his six appearances while upping his scoring average to 11.3 points per game.

6h agoTowns closed with 27 points (10-15 FG, 3-5 3Pt, 4-4 FT), 12 rebounds, one assist, two blocks and one steal across 36 minutes during Monday's 106-80 win over the Nuggets in Game 2 of the Western Conference Semifinals.
Towns was tasked with more responsibility on the defensive end since Rudy Gobert (personal) was unavailable for this contest. Even though he had to deal with Nikola Jokic on both ends of the court, Towns thrived and posted a great stat line. This was Towns' third double-double over his last four playoff appearances, and he's expected to return to his role at power forward in case Gobert is ready to return for Game 3 of the series, scheduled for Friday.

12m agoPettersson isn't practicing Tuesday due to an illness, leaving his status for Wednesday's Game 1 versus Edmonton in doubt, Brendan Batchelor of Sportsnet 650 reports.
After racking up 34 goals and 89 points through 82 regular-season games, Pettersson was a bit of a disappointment during Vancouver's first-round series win over the Predators, picking up three helpers while firing just eight shots on net through six contests. Another update on his status for Game 1 will likely surface following Wednesday's morning skate.

Lukas Reichel CHI LWBlackhawks' Lukas Reichel: Signs two-year extension
17m agoReichel signed a two-year, $2.4 million contract extension with the Blackhawks on Tuesday.
Reichel hasn't really lived up to expectations since being selected 17th overal in the 2020 Entry Draft -- he logged a career-high 65 games at the NHL level in 2023-24, but the 21-year-old forward managed just five goals and 16 points while posting an ugly minus-29 rating over that span. Reichel will likely be a full-time NHLer in 2024-25, but if he doesn't get his game together at the top level soon, he may not last with the Blackhawks beyond this two-year extension.

Henrique is considered day-to-day after being absent from several practices following Edmonton's first-round series win over the Kings. Mattias Janmark is slated to see time on the Oilers' top line due to Henrique's absence, and Connor Brown will draw back into the lineup after sitting as a healthy scratch for the entirety of the Oilers' five-game series win over LA.

Georgiev was a little shaky during Colorado's first-round series against the Jets, recording an .893 save percentage, but he still went 4-1 during the five-game series thanks to fantastic goal support from his teammates. The Stars are coming off a hard-fought seven-game series win over Vegas, so the Avalanche will have the upper hand in terms of rest early in on in the second round.

Hakanpaa hasn't played since March 16 -- he played a total of 64 regular-season games, recording two goals and 10 assists. The 32-year-old could see third-pairing usage if and when he returns to action.

Marchment, who has resumed skating, will miss his sixth consecutive contest. He contributed one goal, three shots on net and 11 hits in two outings versus Vegas during the first round of the postseason. Marchment could be in the mix for a top-six spot in the lineup once he receives clearance to return to action.
