1m agoSanders faces competition from rookie second-round pick Jonathon Brooks (knee) for backfield work during the 2024 season, Joseph Person of The Athletic reports.
Sanders was overtaken by Chuba Hubbard down the stretch of the 2023 season, in which he logged a career-low 129 carries for 432 yards (3.3 YPC) and one touchdown, so the arrival of Brooks could significantly impact his opportunities. First-year coach Dave Canales said the Panthers plan to deploy all three backs, and Brook is working his way back from an ACL tear, so to begin the year Sanders' primary competition for touches could be Hubbard. It's easy to imagine a scenario, though, where Brooks earns himself a more solidified role atop the depth chart once fully healthy.

McDermott started five games at left tackle for the Patriots in 2023, but after adding Chukwuma Okorafor in free agency, New England has opted to let go of McDermott. He'll now have to look for another opportunity with a new team.

11m agoO'Connell remains in position to compete with Gardner Minshew for the starting job this offseason, after the Raiders refrained from selecting a rookie quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft, Mark Anderson of the Associated Press reports.
Las Vegas was an oft-theorized candidate to add a quarterback in April's draft, but six signal-callers ultimately went off the board before the team's first-round selection at No. 13 overall, which became playmaking tight end Brock Bowers. The team invested second- and third-round selections in offensive linemen Jackson Powers-Johnson and Delmar Glaze, putting whoever wins the 2024 starting gig in a better position for success. O'Connell completed 213 of 343 pass attempts for 2,218 yards, 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions across 10 starts last season, solid rookie numbers for a fourth-round pick, but Minshew boasts enough experience that this offseason should play out as a true competition.

18m agoMinshew remains poised to compete with Aidan O'Connell for the starting job this offseason, with the Raiders not having added to the quarterback position in the 2024 NFL Draft, Mark Anderson of the Associated Press reports.
Minshew joined Las Vegas early in free agency back in March, and while it looked like the team was a candidate to add rookie competition via April's draft, six quarterbacks came off the board before the Raiders' first-round selection of tight end Brock Bowers at No. 13 overall. Las Vegas also boosted the O-line with premium picks, selecting second-round guard Jackson Powers-Johnson and third-round tackle Delmar Glaze, so whichever of Minshew or O'Connell ultimately wins the starting role looks to be in a notably better position to succeed.

1h agoRams coach Sean McVay said Saturday that third-round pick Blake Corum reminds him a lot of Williams (hand), Stu Jackson of the Rams' official website reports.
McVay isn't the first to make that comparison, and while it's arguably a compliment that the Rams sought out a similar player, it also means Williams could cede more work to backups than he did last year. The comparison between the two players is imperfect, with Corum being an inch shorter yet 11 pounds heavier (based on combine measurements) and having enjoyed a far more prolific college career in terms of rushing stats. On the other hand, Williams was much more active as a pass catcher in his college days, and he's since proven to be a quality player at the NFL level, scoring 15 TDs in 12 games last season while averaging a league-high 95.3 rushing yards per game. He thus figures to remain the lead back, though he now has much lower odds to match the massive snap shares he handled last season (90 percent or higher five times, 77 percent or higher nine times). The hand fracture Williams suffered in a playoff loss to Detroit shouldn't impact his preparation for 2024.

In the wake of the offseason departure of prior lead back Austin Ekeler, the Chargers' backfield has undergone an overhaul, with Edwards and J.K. Dobbins (Achilles) -- both former Baltimore Ravens -- arriving via free agency and Kimani Vidal through the 2024 draft, joining returnee Isaiah Spiller, a 2022 fourth-rounder. In that context, Popper suggests that Edwards, who GM Joe Hortiz described as a "bell cow" back in March, is in line to get the bulk of the team's work out of the gate this season, while Dobbins bounces back from his Achilles' injury and Vidal and Spiller make their cases to carve out complementary roles in the Los Angeles offense.

John Means BAL SPOrioles' John Means: Slated for season debut this week
6m agoOrioles manager Brandon Hyde confirmed Monday that Means (forearm) would rejoin the rotation this week for his season debut, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports.
Hyde did not divulge which day Means will pitch, but he would be on regular rest Friday in Cincinnati. Means saved by far his best rehab start for last, as he struck out eight while allowing just one hit and one walk over seven scoreless innings for Triple-A Norfolk on Sunday. The left-hander got his pitch count up to 95 in the outing, so he should be ready for a typical workload in his first start with the Orioles. Means is coming back from a left forearm strain.

8m agoTriple-A Nashville placed Roller on its 7-day injured list April 21 with an unspecified injury.
Roller hit .308 with three extra-base hits and a stolen base over 10 games for Nashville, but he hadn't played since April 11 due to the injury before shifting to the IL. The 27-year-old outfielder was added to the Brewers' 40-man roster during the offseason and could make his MLB debut later this summer once he moves past the injury.

10m agoSanchez is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Rays.
Sanchez went 3-for-10 with a pair of doubles, a walk, two runs and an RBI while making starts in each of the last three games, with two coming as a designated hitter and one coming at catcher. The Brewers haven't yet shown a willingness to deploy Sanchez at DH on a consistent basis, so he seems likely to remain in a part-time role while top backstop William Contreras is healthy.

13m agoDuran (oblique) is with the Twins in Chicago for their series against the White Sox and his activation from the 15-day injured list appears imminent, Bobby Nightengale of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
There's no word on Duran possibly being activated Monday, but it sounds like he should join the roster at some point during the series. The closer has been out all season with a right oblique strain but is ready to roll after making two rehab appearances. It's possible manager Rocco Baldelli will want to see Duran in a low-leverage spot or two initially, but it shouldn't be long before he's closing again for the Twins.

18m agoMets manager Carlos Mendoza said Monday that he expects Marte (personal) to be activated from the bereavement list Tuesday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
Marte missed the final two games of the Mets' weekend series against the Cardinals and remains unavailable Monday versus the Cubs, but his return to the team looks to be imminent. Tyrone Taylor will draw a third straight start in the outfield Monday but will move back to a bench role once Marte is activated.

Judge received some reps in left field during spring training, but this is the first time he's made a start at the position in a regular season game since 2016 when he was with Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes-Barre. He could see additional action in left field during the series against the Orioles while Alex Verdugo is on paternity leave. Trent Grisham is getting a rare start in center field Monday.

Embiid has averaged 35.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 5.5 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.0 blocks in 40.3 minutes over the first four games of the opening-round series. However, the reigning MVP, who missed two months during the regular season after undergoing meniscus surgery, continues to be listed as questionable and has struggled in every fourth quarter thus far. With the 76ers facing elimination in New York on Tuesday, it'd be shocking if Embiid didn't suit up.

As expected, Wright, who missed Miami's Game 3 loss for the birth of his daughter, has been upgraded from probable to available. In Game 1, Wright posted 17 points, three assists and two steals in 26 minutes off the bench, but he was a non-factor in Game 2.

5h agoNurkic provided nine points (3-5 FG, 3-4 FT), eight rebounds, five assists, one block and two steals over 20 minutes during Sunday's 122-116 loss to the Timberwolves in Game 4 of the first round of the Western Conference playoffs.
Nurkic was very inconsistent in the first round against the Timberwolves, which was the case for most of the team, to be fair. Overall, Nurkic had a solid regular season campaign for Phoenix, averaging 10.9 points, 11.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 1.1 blocks and 1.1 steals. Nurkic will remain under contract for two more seasons.

6h agoBeal posted nine points (4-13 FG, 1-5 3Pt), one rebound, two assists and one block over 31 minutes before fouling out of Sunday's 122-116 loss to Minnesota in Game 4 of the first round of the Western Conference playoffs.
This was Beal's worst game of the playoffs, and it resulted in the Suns getting swept by the Timberwolves in the first round. For the fifth straight campaign, Beal was unable to eclipse 60 games and struggled with injuries. He ended up making 53 appearances in his first season with the Suns, posting averages of 18.2 points, 5.0 assists, 4.4 rebounds, 1.0 steals and 1.9 three-pointers.

6h agoDurant supplied 33 points (12-17 FG, 2-3 3Pt, 7-9 FT), nine rebounds, five assists and four blocks over 46 minutes during Sunday's 122-116 loss to the Timberwolves in Game 4 of the first round of the Western Conference playoffs.
With the Suns dropping Game 4, they were swept by the Timberwolves and will fall short of their hefty expectations. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Durant had "persistent issues" with the offense and felt as if he was relegated to the corner too often. It will be an interesting offseason for Phoenix, to put it mildly. Durant finished the regular season with averages of 27.1 points, 6.6 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 1.2 blocks, 0.9 steals and 2.2 three-pointers.

6h agoAlexander-Walker finished Sunday's 122-116 victory over Phoenix in Game 4 of the first round of the Western Conference playoffs with five points (2-9 FG, 0-5 3Pt, 1-1 FT), three rebounds, four assists and two steals in 31 minutes.
Alexander-Walker wasn't able to get much going offensively, but coach Chris Finch still trusted him with a significant workload. That's been the case for the entire series, as Alexander-Walker averaged 12.3 points, 4.0 assists, 2.8 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 2.3 three-pointers in 31.0 minutes per game as the Timberwolves completed their sweep of the Suns.

Thompson is coming off a 43-save performance in Saturday's 3-2 overtime loss to the Stars in Game 3. He has stopped 89 of 96 shots in Vegas' first-round series en route to a 2-1 record.

4h agoNamestnikov (face) has a fractured cheekbone, but he hasn't been ruled out of Tuesday's must-win Game 5 versus the Avalanche, Mitchell Clinton of the Jets' official site reports.
It sounds like Namestnikov may put on a full cage and try to gut it out Tuesday, but his status for Game 5 may not be confirmed until the Jets take the ice for pregame warmups. He's picked up one goal, eight hits and a minus-3 rating through the first four games of the Jets' first-round series versus Colorado.

Dillon is stuck in a 12-game goal drought during which he has recorded four assists, 10 shots on goal and 45 hits while averaging 19:49 of ice time per contest. With Dillon sidelined, Logan Stanley stepped into the lineup for Game 4 and figures to remain in that role heading into Tuesday's contest.

Barron, who hasn't resumed skating yet, will miss his sixth straight contest after getting hurt in the penultimate game of the regular season. He registered 11 goals, 18 points, 94 shots on net and 122 hits in 80 appearances during the 2023-24 campaign.

Auston Matthews TOR CMaple Leafs' Auston Matthews: Traveling with team
4h agoMatthews (illness) will join the Maple Leafs when they travel to Boston for Game 5 on Tuesday but remains questionable after head coach Sheldon Keefe told reporters, "We're hopeful he's available and feeling good and back to himself," per ESPN's Kristen Shilton.
Matthews has scored just one goal in his last six contests despite having racked up 34 shots on net and adding two assists over that stretch. Without the world-class center at practice Tuesday, Toronto shifted Max Domi to center in addition to slotting him into Matthews' spot on the No. 1 power-play unit. If Matthews can get even close to 100 percent, he should reclaim both those roles heading into Tuesday's must-win game for Toronto.
