Aidan O'Connell LV QB
Raiders' Aidan O'Connell: Early leader in competition
7m agoCoach Antonio Pierce said O'Connell will take the first snap over Gardner Minshew in the Raiders' upcoming quarterback competition, Paul Gutierrez of ESPN reports.
Pierce praised O'Connell's work so far this offseason, mentioning how he's "changing his body, his work ethic, being here every day, blocking out the outside noise." He did also talk up Minshew and make it clear that Las Vegas considers the starting role up for grabs, saying a quarterback competition is good for motivation across the roster. As a rookie last season O'Connell led the Raiders to a 5-5 record, and this offseason he'll work to take a step forward and build increased chemistry with Davante Adams and Jakobi Meyers, plus rookie tight end Brock Bowers.

Caleb Williams CHI QB
Bears' Caleb Williams: Officially named starting QB
3h agoCoach Matt Eberflus named Williams' the Bears' starting quarterback at rookie minicamp Friday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Williams, the No. 1 overall pick of April's draft, was always a lock to start Week 1 over Tyson Bagent or Brett Rypien, but the team has wasted no time making Williams' position official, with Friday being the first day of on-field workouts for rookies. That allows Williams to immediately begin familiarizing himself with Chicago's offensive scheme without having to worry about splitting any reps. He can start establishing chemistry with fellow top-10 selection Rome Odunze during rookie camp, while veterans DJ Moore and Keenan Allen -- who both worked out with Williams and Odunze during the pre-draft process -- stand to arrive at team facilities for the start of OTAs.

Tarik Cohen CAR RB
Tarik Cohen: Released by Carolina
4h agoThe Panthers released Cohen on Friday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
The 2017 fourth-round pick was an effective passing-down back and punt returner for three full seasons before suffering an ACL tear Week 3 of 2020. He hasn't played in a game since, with an Achilles' tear in May 2022 further setting him back. Cohen spent most of last season on Carolina's practice squad, where he dealt with a hamstring injury for nearly two months and never earned a promotion to the roster. He'll turn 29 this summer and still has plenty of time to find another team before training camp if he wants to continue pursuing an NFL career.

Gabe Davis JAC WR
Jaguars' Gabe Davis: Still working back from injury
4h agoCoach Doug Pederson said Friday that Davis (knee) is dealing an injury and hasn't been able to do much on-field work since signing with the Jaguars, Demetrius Harvey of The Florida Times-Union reports.
Pederson said Davis, who missed the playoffs last season due to a knee injury suffered Week 18 against the Dolphins, continues to recover from an injury from 2023. He then said the Jaguars' wide receiver picture will become clearer in OTAs. It doesn't sound like there's any real concern about Davis' availability, but fantasy managers would certainly prefer to hear he gets back on the field and starts establishing a rapport with Trevor Lawrence sooner than later. Even with both Calvin Ridley and Zay Jones no longer in Jacksonville, Christian Kirk and rookie first-round pick Brian Thomas represent significant competition for target volume.
-
Isaiah Williams 2005 WR
Lions' Isaiah Williams: Gets chance in Detroit
6h agoThe Lions signed Williams as an undrafted free agent Friday, Tim Twentyman of the team's official site reports.
Williams is undersized at 5-9, 179 pounds, but as Twentyman notes, he was productive at Illinois with over 200 catches 200 for 2,295 and 14 touchdowns over the last three seasons. He now gets an opportunity to compete for a depth role with Detroit.

Dawson Deaton CLE C
Dawson Deaton: Let go by Browns
14h agoDeaton (knee) was waived by the Browns with a failed physical designation Thursday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Deaton suffered a torn ACL in August of 2022 and is apparently still recovering from the issue. He'll first aim to get healthy and then search for a new opportunity around the league.

George Springer TOR RF
Blue Jays' George Springer: Out of lineup Friday
4m agoSpring is not in the starting lineup for Friday's outing against the Twins.
Spring will get his first break since April 30, and has recorded five hits on 27 at-bats and one RBI in the six games since then. Cavan Biggio will take right field and bat seventh against Minnesota in place of Springer.
-
Kevin Kiermaier TOR CF
Blue Jays' Kevin Kiermaier: On bench Friday
7m agoKiermaier is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Twins
Kiermaier will be getting the day off Friday despite the Blue Jays facing the right-handed Joe Ryan. Daulton Varsho will start at center field while Davis Schneider and Cavan Biggio round out Toronto's outfield.
-
Jesus Sanchez MIA RF
Marlins' Jesus Sanchez: Sits against lefty
11m agoSanchez is not in the lineup for Friday's matchup against the Phillies, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
The lefty-hitting outfielder will get a break for the first time since last Friday while the Marlins face southpaw starting pitcher Ranger Suarez. Dane Meyers will get the start at right field while Jazz Chisholm and Bryan De La Cruz join him in the back of the diamond.
-
Nick Fortes MIA C
Marlins' Nick Fortes: Resting Friday
12m agoFortes is out of the lineup for Friday's game against Philadelphia, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Fortes will cede backstop duties to Christian Bethancourt on Friday. In May, Fortes is batting 2-for-14 (.143) with a solo home run.
-
Jordan Beck COL OF
Rockies' Jordan Beck: Taking seat Friday
18m agoBeck is not in the lineup for Friday's contest against the Rangers.
Beck was given nine straight starts in left field upon his promotion from Triple-A Albuquerque, but he's gone just 5-for-32 with a 14:0 K:BB in those games, so the Rockies will give him a day to regroup. Jake Cave is in left field Friday.
-
Colt Keith DET 2B
Tigers' Colt Keith: Idle Friday
20m agoKeith is out of the lineup for Friday's game against Houston.
Keith will dodge the matchup with left-handed Framber Valdez on Friday, yielding second base work to Andy Ibanez. In 116 plate appearances this season, Keith is slashing .162/.233/.181.

Jalen Williams OKC SF
Thunder's Jalen Williams: Scores 20 points in Game 2 defeat
4h agoWilliams closed with 20 points (7-17 FG, 2-4 3Pt, 4-4 FT), four rebounds, four assists, one block and one steal across 39 minutes during Thursday's 119-110 loss to the Mavericks in Game 2 of the Western Conference Semifinals.
Williams was the Thunder's second-best scoring option behind Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, but his solid two-way contributions were not enough to lift Oklahoma City to a 2-0 series lead. Williams has been outstanding in the playoffs and has confirmed the improvements he evidenced during the regular season. Through six postseason appearances, he's averaging 20.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 1.3 steals per game while shooting 49 percent from the field.
-
Josh Giddey OKC PG
Thunder's Josh Giddey: Struggles badly once again
4h agoGiddey closed Thursday's 119-110 loss to the Mavericks in Game 2 of the Western Conference Semifinals with eight points (3-6 FG, 0-2 3Pt, 2-2 FT) and two rebounds over 11 minutes.
Giddey's minutes continue to decrease with each passing game, and it wouldn't be surprising if he moves to a bench role ahead of Game 3 given how much he's struggled on both ends of the court. He delivered good numbers against the Pelicans, but in the two outings against Dallas, he's averaging 5.0 points while shooting 40 percent from the floor across 14 minutes.
-
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander OKC SG
Thunder's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander: Sniffs triple-double in Game 2 loss
4h agoGilgeous-Alexander had 33 points (13-24 FG, 1-3 3Pt, 6-6 FT), 12 rebounds, eight assists, two blocks and one steal across 41 minutes during Thursday's 119-110 loss to the Mavericks in Game 2 of the Western Conference Semifinals.
Gilgeous-Alexander finished just two assists away from recording a triple-double, but his outstanding two-way play was not enough as the Thunder came up short in Game 2 of the series. The loss shouldn't take anything away from Gilgeous-Alexander's impact from a fantasy perspective. He's averaging 28.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 6.2 assists per game across six playoff contests.
-
Tim Hardaway Jr. DAL SG
Mavericks' Tim Hardaway: Scores 17 points off bench Thursday
4h agoHardaway posted 17 points (6-10 FG, 2-4 3Pt, 3-4 FT), two rebounds and one assist over 19 minutes during Thursday's 119-110 win over Oklahoma City in Game 2 of the Western Conference Semifinals.
Hardaway stepped his game up off the bench and provided a scoring boost to the second unit, and his contributions proved to be much-needed as the Mavericks evened the series with a huge road win. Hardaway can go hot or cold in any given game, but he should remain an important cog of the Mavericks' rotation during this playoff run.
-
PJ Washington DAL PF
Mavericks' P.J. Washington: Solid output in Game 2 victory
4h agoWashington produced 29 points (11-18 FG, 7-11 3Pt, 0-1 FT), 11 rebounds, four assists, one block and two steals across 40 minutes before fouling out of Thursday's 119-110 victory over the Thunder in Game 2 of the Western Conference Semifinals.
Kyrie Irving didn't have his best performance Thursday, but Washington stepped up in a game where the Mavericks needed someone to carry the offensive load alongside Luka Doncic. This was Washington's best game of the current playoff run, as it was his first double-double since April 7. Washington is averaging 13.0 points and 6.1 rebounds per game in the playoffs, and he's scored in double digits in all but one of his eight appearances to date.
-
Luka Doncic DAL PG
Mavericks' Luka Doncic: Bounces back in Game 2 win
4h agoDoncic provided 29 points (11-21 FG, 5-8 3Pt, 2-2 FT), 10 rebounds, seven assists, one block and three steals over 41 minutes during Thursday's 119-110 victory over Oklahoma City in Game 2 of the Western Conference Semifinals.
Doncic had been struggling with his shot in recent games, but he bounced back admirably in this Game 2 victory, nailing five of his eight attempts from beyond the arc and returning to the regular scoring figures he'd been delivering throughout the entire playoff run. Doncic should play a key role in Game 3 of the series, scheduled for Saturday in Dallas.
-
Arturs Silovs VAN G
Canucks' Arturs Silovs: In goal Friday
26m agoSilovs will be between the home pipes against Edmonton in Game 2 on Friday, Brendan Batchelor of Sportsnet 650 reports.
Silovs was far from perfect in Game 1, giving up four goals on 18 shots (.788 save percentage) but still managed to pick up the victory. In his four postseason appearances, the young netminder is 3-1 with a 2.28 GAA, .908 save percentage and one shutout. If Thatcher Demko (knee) is cleared to play at some point in this series, he will likely supplant Silovs as the No. 1 option in the crease.

Sebastian Aho CAR LW
Hurricanes' Sebastian Aho: Picks up assist Thursday
1h agoAho recorded an assist in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Rangers in Game 3 on Thursday.
Aho helped on Andrei Svechnikov's game-tying marker late in the third period, but his efforts ultimately failed to prevent Carolina from falling behind 3-0 in the second round. Although the Hurricanes have come up short against the Rangers, Aho has excelled with six assists through three contests in the series. That gives him two goals and nine points across eight playoff outings this year after setting a career high of 89 points (36 goals) in 78 regular-season games.
-
Dmitry Orlov CAR D
Hurricanes' Dmitry Orlov: On three-game scoring streak
1h agoOrlov registered an assist in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Rangers in Game 3 on Thursday.
Orlov extended his point streak to three games, giving him a goal and two assists in that span. He's up to four points (two markers) in eight playoff outings this year after finishing the regular season with six goals and 26 points across 82 appearances. Orlov is serving primarily on the third pairing without and is seldom used on the power play, but he's getting plenty of work despite that unglamorous assignment -- Orlov has averaged 21:18 of ice time in the 2024 postseason.
-
Sam Bennett FLA C
Panthers' Sam Bennett: Game-time call
2h agoBennett (upper body) will be a game-time decision for Friday's Game 3 versus the Bruins.
Bennett picked up two points through the first two games of Florida's first-round series versus Tampa Bay before missing the team's next five contests with an upper-body injury. If he's able to return Friday, look for Bennett to center the second line while seeing time with the first power-play unit against Boston.
-
Valtteri Puustinen PIT RW
Penguins' Valtteri Puustinen: Secures two-year deal
4h agoPuustinen inked a two-year, $1.55 million contract with the Penguins on Friday.
Puustinen saw action in 52 games for Pittsburgh this year in which he generated five goals and 15 assists. With a new deal in hand, the 24-year-old winger should be in contention for a middle-six role heading into the 2024-25 campaign. If he can play regular minutes at the NHL level, Puustinen should be capable of challenging for the 30-point threshold next year.
-
Danton Heinen BOS C
Bruins' Danton Heinen: Remains out Friday
4h agoHeinen (undisclosed) continues to be day-to-day but won't be available for Game 3 versus Florida on Friday, Conor Ryan of The Boston Globe reports.
Heinen will be sidelined for his fifth consecutive contest due to his undisclosed injury. Prior to getting hurt, the 28-year-old winger was stuck in a seven-game goal drought during which he managed just one helper and a mere six shots. Once Heinen is given the all-clear, he should be in the mix to reclaim a spot on the third line, likely knocking Justin Brazeau from the lineup.
