2h agoSmith-Schuster's role with Patriots is unclear after the team selected a pair of wideouts in the 2024 NFL Draft, Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald reports.
Over the course of 11 regular-season games in his first year with the Patriots, Smith-Schuster recorded a 29-260-1 receiving line on 47 targets in 2023. Though the veteran wideout -- who is under contract with the team through 2025 -- is presumably past the ankle issue that landed him on IR in December, New England's additions of free agent K.J. Osborn and 2024 draftees (second-rounder Ja'Lynn Polk and fourth-rounder Javon Baker) to a wide receiver mix that also includes returnees Kendrick Bourne (knee) and Demario Douglas, clouds Smith-Schuster's depth chart standing ahead of training camp. With that in mind, both Callahan and Chad Graff of The Athletic suggest that the 27-year-old pass-catcher could end up moving on as the offseason progresses.

2h agoThe Chargers exercised Slater's 2025 fifth-year option, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
This was a no-brainer for new Chargers GM Joe Hortiz. After missing most of 2022 with a torn biceps, Slater returned to start all 17 games last season. As a 2021 rookie, Slater finished fourth in Offensive Rookie of the Year voting, made the Pro Bowl and was a second-team All-Pro selection. The Chargers hope Slater can return to his dominant rookie-year form.

3h agoHall isn't projected to make the Vikings' 53-man roster, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports.
A 2023 fifth-round pick, Hall played 46 offensive snaps as a rookie and turned the ball over three times while absorbing four sacks. He completed 13 of 20 passes for just 168 scoreless yards. With the Vikings' first-round selection of J.J. McCarthy following the signing of Sam Darnold, Hall will need to beat out veteran Nick Mullens for the third spot if he's going to stick in Minnesota.

Chad Ryland NE KPatriots' Chad Ryland: Set to compete with veteran kicker
3h agoRyland is slated to face competition from veteran kicker Joey Slye, who is in line to sign with the Patriots, Mark Daniels of masslive.com reports.
Ryland, who the Patriots took in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, is coming off a rookie campaign in which he made just 64 percent of his field-goal attempts (16 of 25). Though the Maryland product has a strong kicking leg, he'll need to display better accuracy in the coming months in order to hold off the challenge presented by the 28-year-old Slye, who connected on 79.2 percent of his field-goal tries with the Commanders last season.

After being released by the Jaguars earlier this week Slye, it didn't take long for the 28-year-old -- who kicked for the Commanders last year -- to catch on with another team. Now that he's with the Patriots, Slye (who made 19 of his 24 field-goal tries and 32 of his 35 extra-point attempts across 17 regular-season games in 2023) will have an opportunity to compete with 2023 fourth-rounder Chad Ryland, who is coming off an inconsistent rookie campaign for New England.

Bailey Zappe NE QBPatriots' Bailey Zappe: In line to compete for depth slot
3h agoWith veteran newcomer Jacoby Brissett and 2024 first-rounder Drake Maye viewed as roster locks, Zappe figures to compete with rookie sixth-rounder Joe Milton and Nathan Rourke for slotting on the Patriots' depth chart, Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald reports.
Alternatively, Callahan suggests that with five QBs in the mix the Patriots could look to move Zappe, who drew six regular-season starts for the team in 2023. For now, however, Zappe remains with the organization that selected him 137th overall in the 2022 draft. In any case, even if the 25-year-old ends up sticking around as a depth option, he won't have a path to a potential starting role, as long as Brissett and Maye are healthy. With that in mind, Callahan suggests that Zappe could find himself on the radar of other teams seeking signal-caller options once injuries hit.

Braxton Garrett MIA SPMarlins' Braxton Garrett: Five scoreless in rehab start
38m agoGarrett (shoulder) allowed one hit and three walks over five scoreless innings in a rehab start with Triple-A Jacksonville on Thursday.
Garrett struck out three batters, got his pitch count up to 61 and averaged 90.7 mph with his sinker, which is right in line with his normal velocity. It should be his final tune-up before his season debut with the Marlins, which is tentatively slated for Monday against the Dodgers. Garrett has been sidelined with a left shoulder impingement and more recently went through a "dead arm" phase.

Sixto Sanchez MIA RPMarlins' Sixto Sanchez: Draws another start Sunday
1h agoSanchez is scheduled to make his next start Sunday against the Athletics in Oakland, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Sanchez will be making his third straight turn through the Miami rotation, though he should be more stretched out for a traditional starting role Sunday after covering 2.2 and four innings in his first two outings upon moving from the bullpen. He's been hit hard while taking no-decisions against Atlanta and Colorado, giving up eight earned runs on 12 hits and one walk between those starts. With Braxton Garrett (shoulder) likely trending toward a return from the 15-day injured list early next week, Sanchez could move back to the bullpen following Sunday's outing.

1h agoLara has a 2.28 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and a 37:8 K:BB in 23.2 innings through five starts for High-A Wilmington.
Lara was a high-pedigree signee out of Venezuela in 2019, but he never logged an ERA under 4.50 prior to this season. The big, 6-foot-4 righty ranks second behind Owen Murphy among all High-A pitchers with 37 strikeouts and his 30.5 K-BB% is the fourth-best mark at the level.

Deivi Garcia CHW RPWhite Sox's Deivi Garcia: Outrighted to Triple-A
1h agoGarcia cleared waivers Thursday and was sent outright to Triple-A Charlotte, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports.
Garcia was DFA'd on Sunday after accumulating a 7.07 ERA and 1.93 WHIP across 14 innings to begin the season. He'll remain in the White Sox organization, but a return to the 40-man roster will likely depend on his ability to turn things around in the minors.

2h agoBerti (groin/back) is back in the lineup with Double-A Somerset on Thursday as he resumes his rehab assignment, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
Berti couldn't play Wednesday due to a back issue but is back in there following a one-day absence. He's coming back from a groin strain and should rejoin the Yankees within the next few days.

Nick Pivetta BOS SPRed Sox's Nick Pivetta: Could return next week
2h agoRed Sox manager Alex Cora said Thursday that Pivetta (elbow) could rejoin the rotation next week during the team's May 7-8 series in Atlanta, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
Pivetta is slated to make a rehab start with Triple-A Worcester on Thursday and it sounds like that should be the only one his asked to make before he rejoins the Red Sox' rotation. The right-hander has been on the shelf since early April with a right elbow flexor strain. Pivetta was excellent before getting hurt, allowing just one run with a 13:1 K:BB over 11 frames in his first two starts.

Allen missed Tuesday's Game 5 against the Magic due to a right rib contusion. While Allen's absence from practice is a bad sign of his availability for Game 6 on Friday, fantasy managers should look out for an official injury report.

Harris suffered a right hamstring strain during Tuesday's Game 5 against Cleveland, but he participated in the walkthrough portion of Thursday's practice. However, the Magic will still wait to see how he feels in the hours leading up to Friday's tipoff before determining his availability. If he's unable to suit up, Markelle Fultz, Cole Anthony and Anthony Black could see increased run.

Both Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard (Achilles) are attempting to return to action as the Bucks try to keep their season alive Thursday. However, while Lillard has been upgraded to questionable, Antetokounmpo remains doubtful for now. Antetokounmpo's potential return would give the Bucks a significant boost on the road in Game 6, but it's also possible he'd face some limitations after missing the last eight matchups.

4h agoLillard (Achilles) has been upgraded to questionable for Thursday's Game 6 against the Pacers, Jeremiah Johnson of Bally Sports Indiana reports.
Lillard was initially deemed doubtful for a third consecutive matchup, but he's trending in the right direction ahead of Thursday's tipoff. If he's able to return to action, it'd provide a significant boost for the Bucks, who are attempting to keep their season alive by forcing a Game 7. If Lillard is unable to suit up, Malik Beasley will probably remain in the starting lineup, while Khris Middleton would likely be a centerpiece for Milwaukee.

Porzingis sustained a calf injury in Game 4 of Boston's first-round series and was unavailable for Wednesday's Game 5 as the Celtics took down the Heat to advance to the second round. He's been diagnosed with a right soleus strain and was expected to miss several games, and it appears likely that his absence will span the entirety of the second round. However, the Celtics hope that Porzingis will be able to return if the team advances to the Eastern Conference Finals, and the 28-year-old will rest and rehab in the coming days.

6h agoWhite chipped in 25 points (8-13 FG, 5-10 3Pt, 4-5 FT), five rebounds, two assists and one steal across 29 minutes during Wednesday's 118-84 win over Miami in Game 5 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
White co-led the Celtics in scoring Wednesday alongside Jaylen Brown, and he enjoyed playing a more prominent role on offense with Kristaps Porzingis (calf) sidelined and with Jayson Tatum taking a bit of a step back on the scoring side of things. White reached the 20-point mark in three of his five appearances in the series against the Heat, and he should remain an offensive menace in the Eastern Conference Semifinals regardless of whether the Celtics face the Magic or the Cavaliers.

Johnston has been fantastic in the postseason, racking up three goals and three assists, including two power-play points, in five playoff contests. The 20-year-old center avoided the sophomore slump during the regular season, setting new personal bests in goals (32), assists (33) and shots (216).

Nugent-Hopkins has managed just two shots over his last four games, failing to find the back of the net along the way, but has chipped in five helpers over that stretch. In fact, looking back to the regular season, the veteran center has scored only one goal in his previous 10 appearances.

Matt Roy LA DKings' Matt Roy: Two assists in loss
1h agoRoy notched a pair of helpers in a 4-3 defeat to Edmonton in Game 5 on Wednesday.
Roy was able to bring a six-game pointless streak to a close with his two helpers but it wasn't enough to stave off elimination for Los Angeles. Unless the Kings can come to an agreement soon, the blueliner is set to be an unrestricted free agent July 1. Roy should have plenty of offers if he goes to the open market after reaching the 20-point mark for the third consecutive campaign.

Vladislav Gavrikov LA DKings' Vladislav Gavrikov: Snags helper in Game 5
1h agoGavriokov picked up an assist in a 4-3 loss to Edmonton in Game 5 on Wednesday.
Gavrikov ended the 2023-24 campaign stuck in a 17-game goal drought during which he put just 19 shots on net. During that stretch, the Russia blueliner did chip in five assists, including two in postseason action. Despite the slow end to the year, Gavrikov still managed to get back over the 20-point threshold after missing that mark last season.

Andreas Englund LA DKings' Andreas Englund: Delivers helpers in loss
1h agoEnglund recorded an assist in Game 5's 4-3 defeat to Edmonton on Wednesday.
Englund registered his first points since March 15 versus the Blackhawks, a stretch of 20 games without writing his name on the scoresheet. In 82 games this year, the 28-year-old blueliner managed one goal and nine helpers, reaching the 10-point threshold for the first time in his NHL career. Fantasy players probably shouldn't;t be expecting much more out of Englund heading into the 2024-25 campaign.

Stars' Mavrik Bourque: Sent to AHL
1h agoBourque was reassigned to AHL Texas on Thursday.
Bourque had 26 goals and 77 points in 71 AHL contests in 2023-24. He also made his NHL debut April 6, recording two shots and a hit in 10:56 of ice time. Bourque figures to be a key player for Texas in its upcoming playoff series against Milwaukee.
